The Charitabl. Story: From Being Abandoned at Birth in India to Leading a Global Movement in Generosity.
I was abandoned at birth in a field in India.
Born out of wedlock, I was classified as “untouchable” — a label that, under India’s caste system, was meant to define both my present and my future.
As the story goes a stranger — a passing paediatrician — found me and placed me into an orphanage where a nurse took a risk and smuggled me across city lines so I could be adopted under different state laws, my birth certificate was changed and a family in Australia, after years of waiting, received a surprise call that their adoption had gone through — despite having given up hope.
Looking back now I realised that generosity and kindness were a part of my life from the outset, and still to this day shapes my life and lens on the world around me. I spent 13 years working in the not-for-profit space — 6 of those as CEO of a charity — I saw the best parts of humanity collide with some of the worst - from refugee camps to drug rehabilitation clinics I had the great privilege of helping people in their hour of need - mobilising generosity for impact and ensuring generosity remains at the core of the human experience.
In my time working in more than 30 countries and leading teams across Australia and New Zealand I saw the same barrier over and over again: raising funds was harder, slower, and more expensive than it needed to be. I knew if we could just reduce the friction and remove the fees, we could dramatically increase the impact charities have.
It’s where the idea of Charitabl. was born.
What most people don’t realise is that generosity is the only language spoken by every human being on the planet. It transcends religion, culture, class, and background. It’s universally understood — and universally needed. Defined by both a hand-out and a hand-up the world over. This simple fact means that generosity is the truest expression of inclusivity known to mankind and has shaped societies and cultures for millennia.
Our mission is simple: to build faster, safer, and cheaper giving technology that puts generosity back at the core of the human experience.
When I think back over my life, I realise that in many ways I shouldn’t be here, but for the generosity, kindness and courage of others. Charitabl. in many ways is my pay-it-forward for the people who have selflessly sacrificed and shaped my life.
We are Australian owned, operated and have big dreams of changing the world - at the time of writing this we’re still new but we will devote our lives to doing all we can to make the world a better place through generosity and kindness.
